Pre-CanSkate
This Skate Canada National Program is a learn-to-skate program designed for children 3 & 4 years of age. Children are taught basic skating fundamentals, with a focus on continuous movement and creative play.
CanSkate
This Skate Canada National Program is a learn-to-skate program that teaches children 4 yrs+ the fundamentals of forward and backward skating, stopping, balance, turning, forward and backward cross-cuts etc. Beginner hockey and ringette players can also enhance their game by improving their skating skills with our program.
There are six ‘Stage’ badges to complete in the CANSKATE program. Each Stage incorporates skills focusing on the fundamental movements of ‘Skate Forward’, ‘Stop’, ‘Skate Backward’, ‘Turn’ and ‘Jump’. Each Stage also includes ‘Extreme’ skills to challenge the skaters. Once a skater reaches their Stage 4 badge, additional fundamental movements of ‘Speed’, ‘Spins and Spirals’ or ‘Hockey/Ringette’ are incorporated. The skaters are evaluated on a day-to-day basis and awarded badges as they learn the required elements.
Skaters progress at their own speed as coaches test on a continual basis. Skate Canada certified coaches provide a "focus on fun" that creates the best quality- learning environment possible. A maximum skater to coach ratio of 10:1 is maintained. Hockey and ringette players can also enhance their game by improving their skills within this program. As the skater progress through the stages in the Canskate program they will become eligible to move into the Skate Canada test stream.
CanPower
The ‘CanPowerSkate for Better Hockey/Ringette Program’ is an action-packed, high energy instructional power skating program geared to hockey and ringette players that focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance. Skills, techniques and conditioning drills are taught in a progressive format that emphasizes how the skills apply to game situations.
CanPowerSkate is geared to skaters approximately six years of age or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills and are able to stop on command. CanPowerSkate’s Pre-Power is designed for young skaters, approximately four to six years of age who can stand up on skates and move forward. Pre-Power helps develop basic skating abilities including forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and agility skills. Pre-Power is offered within our CanSkate ‘2’ program. A separate brochure is available in our Club Office.
Special Juniors
The Club offers a Special Junior program that is intended to provide both the skater and the parent an "Introduction to Figure Skating". This program runs in conjunction with the Canskate program and helps accelerate skaters through the badge system. Identified skaters working at the Canskate Stage 3 level or higher will learn basic edge skills, stroking skills and free skating skills (jumping, spinning, footwork, field movement etc.). Coaches provide semi-private lessons (2–3 skaters at a time) to skaters enrolled in the program. Ice costs are billed separately from lesson costs. Coaches provide bills directly to parents for their services while ice costs are paid to the Club office. The number of participants on the ice is limited to 40 skaters.
