Traveling Blades Goes International - Marie Skates through China
This latest installment of GSC's Travelling Blades blog highlights the December 2017 trip to China of Marie Wong (STARSkate 4), and her little brother Jasper (CanSkate 5).
On their very first full day in Shanghai, they headed out with great excitement to the All-Star Skating Rink and Skating Club hidden in the lower floor of the Mercedes-Benz Arena stadium (formerly the Shanghai World Expo Cultural Center).
The colourful competition rink sits surrounded within a shopping mall. Marie met three gold level skaters practicing with their coaches during the quieter weekday period. The figure skating club also shares the rink with boys’ and girls’ hockey teams.
Half-way through her time there, Marie worked on her solo. The rental skates made jumping difficult, as they had been worn by thousands of different feet and were worn out. Ouch!
Near the end of the trip in mid-January, Marie and Jasper arrived in Ottawa’s sister city, Beijing.
From among the several outdoor skating facilities to choose from, they decided to go to the famous Shichahai Lake (similar to Ottawa’s Dow’s Lake) just next to the Forbidden City.
Marie enjoyed the figure-skating-only section of the lake in the early weekend morning while there were less people. Later in the afternoon, the ice was jam-packed, shoulder-to-shoulder with skaters.
At the end of their trip you can see now that it isn’t that cold on the lake… Watch where you skate or you will be going for a swim instead!!
