Le Patin Libre - Contemporary Ice-Skating Show this Coming Weekend

The NAC Dance is pleased to welcome back to Ottawa the contemporary ice-skating company Le Patin Libre for the gravity-defying performance of their new creation Threshold. Co-produced by NAC Dance, this adrenalin-laced work pushes us to dive into a new realm of choreographic expression that shines a light on the world of glide. Going far beyond traditional figure skating, the troupe exudes a unique urban street style, high intensity, and finessed artistic expression.

Featuring 5 highly skilled skating artists, Threshold was created in collaboration with dramaturg Ruth Little (who has worked with celebrated choreographers Akram Khan Company and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui), and is performed to the smooth sounds of a musical composition by Jasmin Boivin. Threshold is a poem-in-motion about displacement, change, loss, and memory.

Threshold is performed May 10 at 7:30 p.m. and on May 11, at 5:00 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. at the Minto Skating Centre located at 2571, Lancaster Road, Ottawa.

ABOUT LE PATIN LIBRE

Le Patin Libre was founded in 2005 by Alexandre Hamel, then a retiring professional figure skater and fine arts university student. The collective also features Pascale Jodoin, Samory Ba, Taylor Dilley, and Jasmin Boivin, all former figure skaters that had trained for many years. The group’s first performances were modestly offered on frozen ponds, during the traditional winter carnivals organized by most cities and villages in the province of Québec.

After 10 years of work, the performance group grew into a mature company creating what many now describe as contemporary dance on ice. Support from many of the most respected dance institutions in the world (Dance Umbrella Festival in London, UK; Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, Théâtre de la Ville de Paris, Canada’s National Arts Centre, and more) enabled Le Patin Libre to develop its unique style based on the amazing choreographic possibilities of glide.

Their last NAC Dance presentation Vertical Influences, was named one of the top 10 dance creations in 2014 in the United Kingdom.

ABOUT Threshold

Responding to the extreme environment of the ice rink, Threshold takes its audience from the everyday into an otherworldly place in which bodies and emotions are transformed. As glide allows infinite options between fast-forward, slow-motion and rewind, Le Patin Libre explores an impossible but significant no-man’s land where life and death dance together on the edge of a blade.

Glide allows the human body to move through space while being liberated from walking, running, crawling, and other natural gestures. It’s an impressive “magic,” creating a very unique vertigo for onlookers and performers alike.
