Change in Leadership at the GSC - New Director of CanSkate

While I am sure that this has not been a very well-kept secret, the Gloucester Skating Club would nonetheless like to congratulate and welcome Jodie Bierko as our new CanSkate Director. Sheilagh McCaskill, our outgoing director, will continue to assist and coach over the next several weeks to help with Jodie’s transition to her new role, before officially retiring at the end of September. Please stay tuned for what will likely be an emotional farewell to Sheilagh after her decades of service with us (coming soon).

Jodie’s roots at the GSC run deep, probably the deepest of all, and is truly a family affair through the generations. Her father was the president of the club in the 1980’s, she and her sister Donna (also a president of the club in the 1990’s) learned to skate here, while Jodie went on to represent the club as a competitor. Finally, when the time came, Jodie began her coaching career at GSC.  Her children also learned to skate here at the GSC, her daughter, Sydnie, competed for us and now coaches CanSkate.

Jodie begins this new role with 34 years of coaching already under her belt. As an NCCP 3 National Level Coach, Jodie has a wealth of experience building skaters from the CanSkate grassroots up to the national level. Teaching CanSkate throughout her coaching career, Jodie has a deep appreciation for the learn to skate program and the foundation it lays for future hockey and ringette players, and speed skaters, as well as figure skaters.

As one of the best and biggest clubs in the country, the GSC has consistently worked with Skate Canada to develop and pilot the latest CanSkate methods, and Jodie will continue to steer our CanSkate program to maintain its leading standard.  Skate Ontario recently recognized our club as having achieved “Advanced Standard” under the CanSkate Excellence recognition program, and Jodie also has the energy and creativity to implement new ideas to ensure that we continue to exceed expectations of Skate Canada, Skate Ontario, and most importantly, our skaters and their families.

Please help us welcome Jodie into her new role.

Again, please watch for our special CanSkate 🎵“Bye Bye Bye” 🎵to Sheilagh.

Sincerely,

Lisa Elliott
